Tips on Preparing Your New Home for Winter

Categories: Essex Homes in Charlotte NC, Essex Homes in Columbia SC, Home Buying & Maintenance Tips, News | Posted: November 24, 2015 | Comments Off on Tips on Preparing Your New Home for Winter

WithBallentine model home living area at Kelsney Ridge winter quickly approaching, Essex Homes wants to make sure all of our homeowners and future clients have their homes prepared. Here are some tips on how to prepare your home for the winter:

  • Move your furniture away from vents. You want to make sure the heat is flowing into and around your house without any blockage.
  • Make sure your house is heated to at least 60 degrees, even when you are not at home. This will help prevent your HVAC unit from freezing. In addition, it’s a good idea to have your furnace inspected prior to the first freeze to ensure it’s working at maximum efficiency.
  • If the temperature drops below 32 degrees, let water drip in all faucets to prevent the pipes from freezing.
  • Use thicker curtains for your windows to trap the heat inside. Look for curtains in darker colors or ones with thermal lining that are made to protect a home during the winter season.
  • Reverse the direction of your fan. Setting your ceiling fan to rotate clockwise in the winter months will make the warm air circulate downward. This will help maximize heat in the room, and help you be more efficient with your energy use.
  • Check your windows and doorways for gaps that could allow heat to escape and let cold, wintery air in the room. If you feel a breeze, or if gaps are larger than a nickel, seal them with caulk.
  • After the majority of the leaves have fallen around your home, make sure your gutters are free of debris to prevent damage, such as sagging or leaking.

Essex Homes offers the newest and best home designs on the market and every home is built with the Essex eBuilt Technology – saving you hundreds on your energy bill every year!  With a variety of communities in the most desirable locations, we provide you with a menu of selections to help you personalize your dream home and make it a reality. Choosing the Perfect Paint Color

Categories: News | Posted: October 5, 2015 | Comments Off on Choosing the Perfect Paint Color

Wakefield model home at TulllamoreWhen it comes to the perfect home, you have your Pinterest board to help you figure out exactly what you want. But when it comes to paint colors, do you spend as much time worrying about colors as you do on certain finishes in your home? Essex Homes would like to give you some tips for determining the perfect pallet to personalize your home.

Before planning your color scheme, take into account what the room will be used for. If the room will be used for social gatherings, you may want to make it a neutral or bright color to give off the the right amount of energy. Also, take into consideration the amount of windows a room has, because natural lighting may affect the paint color differently from room to room.

Always remember to test your color choice before using it all over. This is a big mistake that many people make when painting their new home. This is also a chance to go outside your comfort zone and test colors that you normally wouldn’t think of trying. This will help determine the different hues you choose to use in the home, as well as get a feel for the mood it will set for the room.

If you’re looking for a more dramatic appearance in your home, try using different paint finishes for a more textured appearance on a wall. Don’t be afraid to use more than one color; creating a monochromatic scheme in a room is a very modern look that can look very elegant as well. An accent wall is a great way to try a color on for size and will give a room a more dimensional feel.

At Essex Homes, we take pride in our construction process and the building of your new home, and we work with you in picking out your perfect color scheme. Feel free to give us a call anytime for any of our Charlotte, North Carolina or Columbia, South Carolina area communities at 844-456-2020 or visit us online

Top Fall Decorating Tips for Your New Home

Categories: News, News | Posted: September 29, 2015 | Comments Off on Top Fall Decorating Tips for Your New Home

Fall Decor 3As the weather turns crisp and the leaves start to fall, we’re getting ready for the most beautiful season of all. Get out your pumpkins and faux autumn leaves as we take you through some design ideas for your home this season.

When replacing your summer center pieces, think of neutral colors, and try replacing flowers with some simple pinecones and natural colored leaves. If you’re willing to try new trends and go for a more outdoorsy look, try using some small, faux deer antlers. Antlers are becoming a big hit this season, and not just because hunting season is approaching; they have such a unique look and no two are the same.

While looking around your house, are you noticing empty shelves or a bare mantle? Try placing pumpkins that vary in size, shape and maybe even color on them. You can find pumpkins made out of all different materials, including plastic, glass or even natural vine pumpkins. Add in some vines or branches with autumn leaves and berries to accentuate the fall décor. Depending on the size of the space, you can add as little or as much as you like.

When decorating the front of your house and looking for something to put out on the porch or on the front door, a big trend in the past year has been using burlap in your wreath. Or, instead of hanging a wreath this year, try hanging a fall bouquet on the door. Mums come in various sizes and shades and are perfect for just a pop of color to accent your home. Also, placing some hay or straw outside your front door with pumpkins and a basket or two of fall colored flowers will give off the rustic feeling and memories of old hay rides.

If you still feel like your home just doesn’t look right, it might be time for a change. At Essex Homes, we have plenty of new homes available that are move-in ready for this fall season. It’s not too late to get ahead of the season with a new home. For more information on new homes in the Charlotte or Columbia areas, please call 844-456-2020 or visit
